Working with my mentor, photographer Greg Miller, I’ve been photographing various models: Suzi, Kate, Regina, and Mike. The point of working with models is to hone my composition skills and to work with people in situations or activities. I’ve been shooting during the day and at night. I’ve been using scrims and have tried creating “portrait obscura” images where the subjects’ faces are somehow obscured. I’ve also been trying to scout out locations ahead of time and sketch some portrait ideas prior to shooting with the models.

One of the suggestions from the January 2018 residency was that my work wasn’t disturbing enough. I’ve tried to make darker picture this semester and move away from the kind of portraits I’ve made in the past. The picture above of my mom is from a series I’m calling Janus: Experiments with Motion.
